FARMINGTON VALLEY TIMES Published: Wednesday, September 04, 2013As Canton’s Valley Sports Center (VSC) team plans for Fall Open House on Saturday Sept. 7, 11 a.m to 1 p.m. the indoor sports complex at 310 Albany Turnpike pulsates with activity and high energy; VSC has a new leader running the show and owner Mark Lange could not be happier.
“When I made the decision to return to the suit and tie world, I knew I needed to bring someone in that not only had the needed experience but also the demonstrated success in running a multi-faceted sports complex such as ours,” says Lange. “When Joyce came along, I knew I had found the person I could trust to not just run my business, but to also ensure it grows to its full potential.”
Joyce Hyde brings to VSC over 30 years of recreation industry experience, having been recognized for results in increasing sales and retention, innovative program development, leadership, and exceeding expectations in overall profitability. A NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Joyce will also continue to write her on-line articles as the Hartford Fitness Examiner and Hartford Dance Examiner for Examiner.com in addition to her new role at Valley Sports Center.
“I am very excited to be on board here at Valley Sports Center,” said Hyde. “There is incredible potential for this facility to expand its programming through partnerships with other Farmington Valley providers in order to best serve the community.” Since coming on board Hyde has secured the rights for VSC to offer the Les Mills high intensity Grit™ Series beginning in September, has partnered with Canton Parks and Recreation to offer an 8- week Lil’ Kickers child development program for ages 2 -4 at Mills Pond Park this fall, and is on the verge of launching the new VSC Birthday “McParty” option with Canton neighbor McDonalds at 220 Albany Avenue.
Says Hyde “Through my career I have learned successful collaboration creates more opportunities for everyone, so the community as a whole wins!”

Basketball players from Farmington Valley and surrounding towns have a unique opportunity to learn the game from an experienced major college coach this summer in Canton. Coach Seth Greenberg will lead a full-day basketball camp for boys in grades 7-12, July 22nd - July 26. This one week camp will meet 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM at Valley Sports Center 310 Albany Turnpike, Canton Conn. and will include skill stations, lectures, contests and game situations.
Coach Greenberg has won 378 games as a Division I head coach over 22 years at three schools – Long Beach State, South Florida and Virginia Tech. He led his teams to the NIT tournament 8 times and to the NCAA tournament 3 times. Named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2008, Coach Greenberg is currently a lead college basketball analyst for ESPN and is coaching the USA Men’s Basketball Team at the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Coach Greenberg will lead all aspects of the camp the entire time players are present, providing camp participants with opportunities to apply the playing skills they have learned,“My years of coaching have taught me the value of teaching fundamental basketball skills and helping players apply those skills in game situations. I’ve found that using a variety of different drills to provide repetition leads to excellent skill development in youth, high school and college players. I’m excited to be running this camp as a way to help players in this area develop their skills and learn the finer points of the game.”
Valley Sports Center is fortunate to have such a high caliber coach lead this week of camp. According to VSC owner Mark Lange, “The students that attend this camp will gain a tremendous amount of knowledge and skill by learning from Coach Greenberg. His programs at VSC are always well received and I’m pleased that players in the Farmington Valley will have this unique opportunity.
